Why do bipolar people stop taking?

Question:
their medication and refuse it? What kind of feeling do they get when taking the medication? Is it that horrible? It seems it would be better than the way they feel without it. I need to know this. If you are bipolar and taking meds, what do they do negative to you?

Answers:
BiPolar people have violent mood swings most of their lives.
The current medications quell this by impeding the upper and lower parts of the moods.

This leaves the BiPolar patiend feeling "nothing". some of them describe it as a "numb" emotion. And, whereas, this kills the depressions it also kills laughter and feeling good.

Its still a relief.. but most patients begin to miss feeling "good" and laughing.

Other Answers:
cause they like the mood swings

When you are bipolar..you have highs and lows. when they are low..they know they need it..but when they are on their highs..they feel better and feel they can stop taking it. I dont know that their is a negative feeling from the meds..but everyone is different.. it may have side effects they dont like. but when someone is bipolar..they have two different spectrums..and one being low.very low..and the other is high..so high nothing seems impossible. The medication that they take usually makes them feel like there aren't themselves anymore. Instead of mood swings, you get one mood all day long. No happy, no sad, just existing. I have had a couple of friends who stopped taking things like prozac for that reason also.

Weight gain is the only thing that I dont like. I take seroqual at night. It puts me to sleep. In the morning I take Effexor XR. I do good on it.

Any medication that you take is gonna give you some side affects. Some people can't get used to them, so they decide to quit the meds. NEVER STOP COLD TURKEY! You should always consult a doctor before stopping medication. Good question. Take care of yourslef.

I dated a girl that was bi polar. I was not an easy relationship for sure. I never knew where she was coming from.

I did a little research about it and found that when they are up the don't think they need their med's . But as the body begins to shift to the down side it is too late for the med's to have any effect on them.

She never really talked about it much and if I pressed her , it wasn't funny being around her.

We broke up not because of her disease but because she cheated on me more then once.

I heard she committed suicide about a year or so ago. Must have been during her down swing times. God rest her soul

its mostly the side effects along with the feeling of feeling "up" Because every day when you take that medication, you are reminded that you are not normal. I stopped taking my medication because it was easier to deal with the highs and lows than to look myself in the mirror and take those pills everyday.

I stopped taking 1 med because it gave me tremors and I felt sick when I lied down. It was a mood stabilizer that was suppose to help me rest and manage my manic behaviors.
In the past I've cut down medications because I was feeling better emotionally, but didn't want to feel spacey or lethargic.
These are reasonable measures for Bi-Polars who feel OK ~ because they just want to be OK without meds even though they shouldn't stop meds because of the chemical imbalance in the brain. It doesn't do anything negative. My mother believes everyone around her is crazy and needs the medication, not her. It's a denial issue. She thinks nothing is wrong with her.
