Is it possible for the iq of a depressed person to fall significantly?

Question:
I think i have been depressed for a couple of years now and i have noticed that i find it really hard or impossible to come up with solutions to different kinds of problems that i found real easy to solve before i was depressed.so has my iq really gone down or do you have any other theory??

Answers:
Depression affects memory, but it doesn't mean your IQ has gone down. It's just that there is too much activity going on in the brain right now that it's making itself confused. High levels of cortisol damages neurons in the brain brought on by stressful periods of depression, or it could be the other way. You still have your capabilities, it's just that the brain feels too stressful to deal with it now. It's like a protective reflex.

Other Answers:
The IQ would not drop, but we are all humans and are not immune to making the most stupid decisions at times

When a person gets depress, they get memory problem , and they can't concentration as before. It does become hard to come up with solution when one is depress. Good news is, when you get better it will all come back to you again. Go see a doctor for your depression.

Your IQ should not have gone down. It could be the medication, if you're on any, making you dopey, or it could be that you cannot concentrate, which is often the case when one is depressed. I have been depressed two years now too. I am not working anymore and find it hard to read a difficult book. But I don't think that my IQ has gone down. I am going to ask my shrink tomorrow though, to be sure! One of the symptoms of depression is inability to concentrate, think, or make decisions as well as you did when you weren't depressed. This is not permanent. Get some therapy or meds!

maybe its the lingering feeling of being depressed is clouding your decision making.

your IQ cannot drop due to depression, however if you have clinical depression it can cause lapses in memory and judgement which you didn';t have before. Basically, your mind gtes "stuck" sometimes on 1 thought and its hard to pull out of it to focus on other thoughts
