Why am I so afraid to get help?
Question:
Answers:
You are afraid because our society puts such taboos on people who have problems, especially mental, that sets them apart from the norm. Families have problems accepting that someone in their fold could be suffering from such a thing and don't want to deal with it. When I once reached out to a family member to share what I was feeling, he said,"You have to stop this, don't you realize that you are affecting the people around you!" Wow! That was helpful! Not!
Many times we shut down and internalize our feelings. We feel outside and alone. We suffer in silence because we feel that no one can possibly understand us.
I suffered panic attacks for years and only when I acknowledged the problem and knew I needed help, did I go to my physician. He listened to me, asked questions and together we found a medication that put an end to all of that. It was trial and error, trying different drugs. If I had known how easy it is to work with and control, I would have gone much sooner.
Don't give up hope! Go to your doctor. Write your symptoms down. It will make it easier when you talk to him. It may also be that you need some counseling. If necessary, he will arrange that too. Good luck and hang in there!

You have not fully accepted that you have a problem. Or you are afraid to show weakness.
Because you don't want to hear the answers?
What kind of help??
I just read a previous question. Are thinking of suicide? Don't do it - it will DESTROY EVERY SINGLE PERSON LEFT ON THIS EARTH WHO CARE ABOUT YOU. I know for a fact! Call the suicide help line.
Well, I found that I didnt want to actually admit to myself that I have a problem because I didnt want my parents to know that I was 'weak' in a way. Then everything started spiralling down from there and I finally admitted that I have a few problems, i have depression, a personality disorder and ocd.
However, at the moment, the mental health team in my area are only offering 6 (six) sessions to intervene and provide medication or 'support', this is attributed to the fact that we are numbers on a sheet of paper and that money is running short unless of course you are a junkie or alcoholic (self inflicted damage). These people get spans of help.
Its us people who have mental health issues which are fixable/controlled that get nowhere. Sorry, I am digressing.
I think the main thing is hons, if you have recognized that you have a problem, first go to your GP and talk to them because sometimes they are able to best answer your questions and start the ball rolling. With regards to the 'stigma' of having a mental health issue, I honestly think people like us are normal, we still have feelings of love, pain and happiness but with more intensity then the regular hard assed, stiff upper lip types, so dont worry about what they think coz they know nothing!! Good luck and stay strong, you'll get sorted! Lots of love, the world's number one mentally ill person.
You should make an appointment with your GP. You don't have to tell the receptionist what it's about. Just the doctor when the appointment comes round. Treat the meeting like a conversation rather than a consultation. You can be confident that the Doc will be smart enough to appreciate the problems at the very least to the extent to refer you to someone with more experience and knowledge and who will be able to give you sound advice. They're professional people who spend their lives trying to solve problems for people. Let them see what they can do.
Whatever else might happen, it can't hurt.
