It is a sickness.

During the initial stages of depression, you can still CHOOSE to get a grip and shake yourself out of it. But in worst cases of depression, it becomes an illness. So its both. I suggest you look at all the symptoms of depression so you can figure it out for yourself as well if its a mind-set or an illness. It's a chemical imbalance (sometimes just temporary, sometimes people are just more susceptible to it). It is a sickness, but positive thought is helpful in the process of getting out from underneath it.

it is a sickness and should be treated by a doctor if last for more than 2 weeks

Difficult to say - there are different types of depression. Bipolar disorder and clinical depression are thought to be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. However, in the 'physician heal thy self' school it is unknown as to whether positive thought can affect the balance. After all, the placebo effect is strong enough to provide apparent cures to various disorders.

Its all in your head It's an illness

It is a illness and the really sad thing is its not curable either but there is help you can get to make it liveable i have suffered with it since i was fifteen and there is bad times but there are alot of positives aswell . you jst have to find the strength to carry on and i am determined to not let it beat me.

Its more of a sickness, being in a deep hole and as you try to get out, the hole grows deeper. Depression makes you sick, cry, sleep and be no socialisable. Depression is caused by debts, money problems, job problems, family problems, past problems.

Ive been through years of depression. I try my hardest not to let it beat me. Some days it doesnt, other days it takes over everything and leaves me weak and very tired.

Basically depression is a state of mind, which normally sets in after a long time of negative happenings/attitude/state of mind and normally one is not aware about it. Yes it can be shrugged off in the beginning simply by changing to a positive attitude either through auto suggestions or may be with the help of family or friend(s). Definitely family is a great support in such a state. However if you are unable to get rid of it, you may take help of a trained professional. The most important point is that more you delay on it more time it would take to go away. Nevertheless it is not impossible to get rid of it

i think you can't do it by yourself. i couldn't. behavior modification therapy worked for me though,.drugs ? i dunno if they helped me or just slowed my recovery to halt the snowball of vicious circle i was in. i knew the psych techs were doing behavior modification psychology on me but . i bought it anyway. i snapped out of that black funk.its all about reward good behavior, ignore bad. not easy to apply if you not professional, i say check in mental health center and don't worry about any "stigma" attatched.. a "nervous breakdown is no different than a kidney stone, its a medical thing that can be treated with therapy to get your body to produce the right chemicals or else drugs are are real factor. i chose to get off the drugs (and i'm not talking about illegal) maybe i did need them but then i didn't cuz my body got back in sync with my brain or w/e.good luck C};-) The thing about depression is that you don't know you have it.

You just think that you are having a tough period to deal with but you can handle it. It is a sickness that you can't escape from you can't understand, you hurt everywhere you only hope that the next pill they give you snaps you out of it.
