Question:
...and I feel really good about everything but there is still something missing! I don't feel complete. I can't figure it out. can anyone help me? or is this part of recovery? some kind of lifelong purgatory? my cross to bear?

Answers:
It takes time, just remember to enjoy the journey!

Maybe it's the spiritual side that you are lacking.

Did you do 12 step?

First, learn to take charge of your life and attempt to understand that humans are fallible and prone to mistake. Especially in a complex capitalistic country like the US. When you add religion in the picture, and say things like "my cross to bear" you have a very volatile situation which further distracts from challenging your thinking and controlling your behaviour. If you occupy yourself with thoughts that condemn, then you will feel condemned or in a "purgatory". It is simple yet difficult and requires practice. Engage yourself in activities that are not compatible with thoughts that bother you. Go for a Run around the block a few times! All these things are temporary and if given time to naturally decompress, they will fade away and you will start anew. Stay clear of Alcoholics Anonymous! This cult will only distract you and prolong the "recovery" that you desire. They will distract you from the source of the pain that you experience by saying that some entity outside your SELF can heal you. Only you can heal the SELF by largely changing the way you think. Do not rely on spirits to make you well.
One of the big problems drinkers face when they quit, is what to do with all the extra time on their hands. They are accustomed to not seeing or feeling that time, now it's staring them in the face. What are you doing to occupy that new found time? If the answer is nothing, your feelings are the feelings of a bored person. Same if the answer is working. Set up a mixed bag of activities so you feel worthy. By the way, you repaid your debt to society the moment you quit. And I want to ask all who read this to give you a rousing round of standing ovation applause for a job well done.
