How to manage a mentally retarded?

Question:
He is 33. Cannot work. Over sleeping and over eating is the problem. Physically OK. Wants to marry. It may be better to keep him in rehabilitation centre. Are there any where I can keep him throught his life.

Answers:
i help manage a mentally retarded/autistic man. wake him up dont let him sleep to much he may throw a fit but he'll get over put him on time out if he does. overeating is the worst problem to deal with, i know this sounds cruel but keep food besides healthy ones like friuts and veggies in a different room. and lock the refridgerater only let him eat 3 times a day like you do. eventually hell get used to it it will train him not to eat all the time it sounds cruel but it is for the best in his health but let him eat snacks in between meals evertime you eat something let him eat something or that would be cruel i wouldnt put him in a home it will only make him worse in the long run

Other Answers:
just be there for him , if he needs any help

i think you must put him into rehabilitation center..thats the best idea for his health and condition.. Any "group home" placements in your area? Would be nice if he could be with other handicapped people in a "family/work" environment and I would also look for the possibility of a sheltered workshop where he could go during the day.

Would have to have a lot more details to answer your question with a a good answer. There are so many degrees of mental retardation or mental conditions, over eating and over sleeping might indicate depression and some medications have been proven to help this condition. Assisted Living Homes is one option you might look in to. It's like living at home with others that need 24 hour care, mental or physical. Some homes have only 1-5 people they care for. So many answers, but really do need more details. I am not a professional but have had to research this area for someone.

Watch Best Boy Best Man. It is an award winning documentary on this subject. It lists a variety of agencies at the end.

go and look into rehabilitation centers that can help him out
