St John Wort..?
Question:
Answers:
Yes, it is. But there are a few things you need to know about it. Most importantly, don't buy the homeopathic version. You can tell if something is homeopathic because somewhere on the label you'll see '4X' or 32X or something else. This indicates that the substance has been diluted however many times.
Basically, there is a lot of evidence supporting St John's Wort for depression, but no evidence that homeopathic remedies work. That doesn't mean that they definitely don't work, but to ensure that the StJW is going to work, don't buy homeopathic.
Second, there are drugs you can't use with StJW;
* It might make the pill less effective (scattered reports)
* If you have liver problems or are pregnant, you must speak to a doctor first
* Any blood-thinning medications, immune suppressants, HIV medications may be made ineffective with StJW
* If you take StJW with normal antidepressants, neither will work.
It can never hurt to talk to your doctor first, just to check if there any reasons the doctor knows of that you shouldn't take it.
It will take between 2 - 4 weeks to start to work, and after about 12 weeks it should be at full effectiveness.
Other Answers:
Yes, I think it is generally accepted as helping. But it's better to discuss this with your doctor. St. John Wort can't be taken with a lot of other meds so you need to be careful with use of it.
Didn't do a thing for me . it's generally recommended for only mild depression. If it's serious, please do something now. See a doctor. Some of the new medications do help some people. Don't let it get out of hand, OK? Yes its awseome works well with mild depression although not good with psychotic depression.
If you just have those seasonal blues, it is helpful. I normally get kind of down in the winter and don't really want to do anything but sit around and hibernate. St John's Wort keeps me going during those cold months, stops me from sleeping 15 hours a day and being anti-social.
If you are overly depressed or it is due to a trauma I doubt it will do anything for you. It just keeps your chemicals in line for minor depression. It is no longer the best thing for depression. See this site under "depression" for best herb for depression (camu camu fruit) plus how diet can affect depression.
