Legal ways to obtain extra restricted medicines when going overseas?

Question:
My adult son may soon work in Afghanistan, and hopes to take enough of his FDA Schedule 2 ADHD medicine (Ritalin) with him for at least six months. Federal law only allows obtaining a 30-day amount at a time. Are there exceptions for this? Any other suggestions?

Answers:
Yes, you can get exceptions. However, if he is going with the armed forces or with an agency that is contracted by the US government they will take care of these things. Also, there are doctors there who can write scripts too. Truthfully, you need to have your son call his doctor and explain the situation, show the doc proof of the work, and the doc should be able to help you.
