What organization would be best to help me?

Question:
Many of you know, my father is an alcoholic. I've gone to Al-Anon and wasn't too impressed with their "ways" of "letting the alcoholic be." His lifestyle is killing not only himself but ther rest of our family, too, which is only my brother and me. (My mother died in 2001)

Is there another group out there that would be better suited for family members of alcoholics that would give REASONABLE and REALISTIC advice? I also have an appointment with a psychiatrist to talk about my problems, but that appointment isn't until August 28th.

Also, do any of you have personal friends or family that have dealt with alcoholism? What's the best way to deal with them? Confront them either sober or drunk?

Thank you all so much for your information.

Answers:
the children of alcoholics have their own group. ask AA or al-anon to refer you. i know how hard it is to be a child of an alcoholic - i have two children from my marriage to one. it seems illogical to let the alcoholic be and leave him to his own destruction but the message really is to you- that you can NOT cure him. you can NOT control him. you can have a confrontation with him and your friends and family were all of you tell him exactly how you feel but in the end- he is going to make his own choices. it is a disease and one that is very destructive to everyone it touches. good luck. i know it's hard.
