Getting the blues once in awhile is normal for everyone, but if this feeling of depression lasts for more then a month seek professional counseling and medication. There is nothing to be ashamed of about being depressed. Some signs are loss of ambition, feeling helpless or hopeless, losing interest in sex, eating more then usual or eating less, sleep disturbances, getting startled easily, crying suddenly. these are just some of the symtoms. When the problems in your life are so overwhelming that you are paralyzed by it and cannot or will not take any action to correct it.
When your issues are preventing you from living your life as you desire or causing you to be dysfunctional (cannot work, don't want to leave the house, poor relationships with others, etc)...and you cannot seem to find it within yourself to better or correct these things...
Actually, it's probably best to have gotten help prior to getting to the point(s) above...but definitely do so if they apply!

it worked for me when I needed it, and also helped me realize some bad patterns embeded in my brain that for years held me back emotionally and in my life, now I don't go aymore,but I know what to do or not to do. some people think it is weird and well they can kiss my butt.
well i shouldve resorted to theraphy after having a neverous breakdown telling off my best friend, my parents, my boss and anyone else that got in the way...and told everyone i would...hasn't happened yet, i dont think its really ever time to let someone else play inside your head when theirs already enough voices up in their...why do they need more company?
dont worry its never as bad as you think, and by actually dealing with it, no one really needs theraphy
The wording of your question, in particular the use of the phrase "resort to" leads me to believe you see therapy as a bad thing.
You should consider it when you see no clear answer to your problem. You should consider it when you see no problems but others keep telling you, you have a problem. And you should consider it when you are tired of having problems.
I think, you should NOT wait until the problem troubles you as man problems are self-feeding - meaning longer you wait, bigger it gets.
It will not only solve the problem you don't know how to solve, it will help you solve the problem quicker and end up with more complete solution.
A serious question deserves a serious answer.
There is a lot of stigma attached to therapy and therapy in it's many forms can be beneficial to each and every single one of us. Your question is vague to why one would consider therapy.
When you must get professional therapy....
1. Thoughts of suicide
2. Thoughts of injuring yourself or others
3. Depression that affects daily routines such as work, hygiene, home and family.
If you are not in these situations and are feeling the need to reach out for help there are other avenues such as meeting groups usually listed in the newspaper, colleges, churches and schools.
Be strong if the question is for yourself and also if it is for a loved one.

I think of therapy as "gym" for the mind. And frankly I think most people on the planet would benefit from therapy just as much as they'd benefit from getting some daily exercise. So many of us are emotionally unhealthy, even though a lot of people seem to insist they're fine ..
I think if YOU feel you would benefit by talking to a sensitive professional, then that's when you do it. I don't think it's a "last resort" by any means .. in fact, not everyone has the courage to admit they need help, and in my experience, the ones going to therapy end up being the stronger characters ..
As late as possible, especially if the depression is caused by temporary events. Once a person is on medication, it goes on and on and one can never really get off it - it seems to me. Varieties of medicines are given with very little understanding or effort to understand the side effects of these medicines on the patient. Any adverse reporting by the patient is treated as part of the illness and ignored.
Best thing that can happen to a depressed person is to stay in close touch with loving family members and friends and recover as naturally as possible. In the large families of the past generations, there were very few cases of incurable depression, while in the present day nucleus families, there are many instances of devastated patients and families.
