I am on an Antidepressant?
Question:

Registered Nurse here; The antidepressant, may not be the cause of your diminished sex drive. It could actually be your depression. You didn't say how long you have been on effexor, but the majority of antidepressants take two to four weeks to reach a therapeutic level. If you have been on the effexor for this length of time and beyond. Then you should go in and talk to your physician, share the side effects, and the two of you decided together what changes in medication regimen would benefit you most. Thanks for the opportunity to address such a sensitive question. Speedy recovery to you. Hang in there, don't give up, sometimes, one has to try several different antidepressants to find that individual balance for them.
Just ask your doctor for an antidepressant that has no sexual side effects. There are several, he'll know which ones they are.
Lexapro is the anti depressant that is suppose to have the least amount of side effects. Unfortunately, with these drugs there are going to be at least one or two downsides. You can also try Cymbalta. Ask the Dr. if you could sample one.
Good Luck.
Citalopram is a very effective anti-depressant and has very few side affects.I have epilepsy and my neurologist professor Martin Robinson claimed that Citaloprams side effects were far less than Zolofts which I was initially on and had no negative reactions against my other anti-convulsant medications which I found was correct after the change was made to Citalopram.
AS stated above, Lexapro and Celexa are supposed to be the best two anti-depressant pills on the market. Of course, talk to you doctor.
But what I would further recommend is finding a way to get off the pills. Pills are great to set you back on your feet, so you can start working with the core issue of your depression. Pills are pretty much bandaids and they mostly mask instead of solve the problem. Furthermore, after extended use, you heighten the risk of your pill failing you. I've had that happen to me before and it's horrifying.
But not to scare you or anything. Getting off pills is hard, but with the right plan and good thereputic help, it can be done pretty safely. Make sure you have a therapist you can trust and a definite plan for getting off the medication. Make a schedule that includes time for exercise, meditation, therapy, relaxation and work that makes you feel necessary and accomplished. A strong support network of family and friends is also recommended. Eat well and be sure to be gentle with yourself. Once you're off your medication, your libedo will return to normal. And don't worry, if things get rough, you can always go right back on your meds.
Best of luck!
