What's the difference between a depressed teen and someone who suffers real long-term depression?

Question:
I'm talking about bi-polar, unipolar, schizophrenic, manic, and the like against common teenage gloom. I speak from firsthand experience with the former.

Answers:
A depressed teen usually isn't depressed for a long time. It is usually short-term depression. Anyone can have short-term depression. The long-term depression is usually caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain that needs medicine to treat it whereas the short-term depression doesn't always need medicine to treat it. However, short-term depression can turn into long-term depression if the cause of it is not dealt with in a timely fashion.

Other Answers:
teens are depressed because they dont get their way or because the teen is emo and the other depressed person's wife just left them...there, I hope that helps.
People can get whats called "Situational Depression" that is caused by bad events in their lives (or adolesence) but if after 3-6 months of professional therapy, the psychologist still beleives that they are substantially depressed, then they are assigned one of those conditions.
If it last for more than a couple of weeks.
every one gets depressed. teens get it because things just get them down but they could have suffered for a while before some one noticed. real long term depreesion is something totaly different. you have been through all the ups and downs but are still here. depression has many ratings and only a doctor can decide what you have.
Real long term depression is (quite surprisingly) LONG TERM. It is a disorder that requires constant medical attention and is completely serious. While teens also have needs and go through "drama and trauma" It's just a small factor of their lives that soon will pass after they find a new boyfriend or find something that makes them happy and stick with it. Don't get me wrong, teens can go through the same long term effects, but there is usually a stage tweens and teens have to drag themselves through before reaching adulthood. They notice things aren't as bad as they could be and stop dwelling in self pity, and take a step out into the world and try to make their mark in it. It's an ongoing cycle.
The difference is life or death. Teens with depression will come out of it.. Teens with manic depression won't. They go through big time highs and lows that u and I couldn't understand. It never goes away and most of the time gets worse. After finding the medicine that works for them they can live a healthy and productive life. If you think you know someone then the best thing u can do is get them help. All mind illnesses need medication and sometimes threapy.
A depressed teen is usually the victim of their own hormonal imbalances and their interactions with the still undiscovered world around them. A person who experiences feelings of sadness, uselessness and things of that nature for more than 6 months is considered chronically depressed. The things you mentioned above like bi-polar disorder and schizophrenia are conditions that require medication and are the result of a chemical imbalance within the brain which is can or cannot be triggered by the environment. People with long-term depression need a daily regimen of medication such as Zoloft or Lexapro and may require additional counseling or therapy in order to feel "normal" again. Exercise may also help by releasing "happy" chemical hormones into the system during and after.
You can google the DSM-IV TR diagnostic criteria for these mental disorders. These criteria separate normal mood swings and behaviors from actual mental disorders. Mental health professionals use this book to diagnose all mental disorders. Depression for longer than two weeks, for most days in a row is a diagnosable as a major depressive episode. manic episodes have to last for at least 7 days without medical intervention. Hypomanic epsodes have to last at least 4 days. This sort of thing is NOT normal for teenagers. It is normal for them to have ups and downs. they aren't supposed to be gloomy for long periods of time. Besides, simply meeting the criteria is only one part of diagnosis. They must also show signs of deteriorating functioning and distress. Hope this clears things up for you.
IF TEENAGE GLOOM CONTINUES AND GET WORSE OVER THE COURSE OF A COUPLE OF YEARS ODDS ARE YOU ARE A CANDIDATE FOR SUFFERING FROM LONG-TERM DEPRESSION. GLOOM AND DOOM TEENS SHOULD SEEK COUNSELING OR JOIN SUPPORT GROUPS SO THEY CAN SEE IF THEY GET ANY RELIEF FROM THEIR SYMPTOMS IF THEY DO ODDS ARE YOU WILL OVER COME THE GLOOM. IF NO RELIEF IS GAINED SEEK OUT PROFESSIONAL HELP FROM A PSYCHIATRIST.
GOOD LUCK,
DODA
