Question:
Doctors want to put me on Gabitrill. I have a problem with pain pills and coke because it balances out my moods. I have been clean for almost 2 months. I drink a 6 pack of beer. I am also seeing a councelor which has helped me a lot. My marriage of 10 years and 4 children or on the line. Any suggestions?

Answers:
well i'm bi-polar also. i've been on meds since age 24. i am now 59. first of all, i would stop taking my pills because i felt so good. i would be in the manic stage so bad after complete cold turkey from my meds it didn't take any time and i was severly depressed. i'm talking 6 bad spells -- i was completely nonfunctional. i have the worst case of being bi-polar you can have. i should have learned my lesson the first time i quit my meds. my last spell back in dec,'97 -- nov.'98. it lasted 10 months. nothing helped i had three different drs. the last one, told my husband i had to have shock treatments. that was the way i got well.as for the pain pills and coke you feel they help you by balancing out you're moods -- don't kid yourself, they are addictive, as you know. does your dr. know this? and about the beer? you have to come clean to be helped. the bi-polar meds ---- there are so many of them that it takes sometimes two weeks to work. if they don't help get a different med or meds. you are lucky because you are in stage 1. i must be in stage 100. i know there is no such number, but that is my bi-polar situation. i will never stop my meds again! good luck try what your dr. wants you to take. no beer or alochol either or pills or coke. concerned -- betty boop
Talk to your signifigant other. I'm sure your husband (or wife) will understand what you're going through and will be able to help you. His emotional support will be just as good as any drug you can get, and will probably be more effective in the long run. Follow your doctor's recommendations and don't let the communication dry up between you and him, and you'll be fine :)
