I want to go on wellbutrin, do I talk to my doctor or do I need to see a psychiatrist?

Question:
I get very nervous in social situations, I usually bail out before an event. I don't know why...just having a casual conversation with people I don't know to well turns me into a fidgeting, blushing mess. I just get wound up for no reason. This might sound odd too but I don't like to check my voice mail..I think I dread calling people back. The reason I thought wellbutrin might work is that a friend w/ similar problems used it to quit smoking and then stayed on it because it help with her social anxiety. I really just want to know how I go about getting a prescription..... I really don't like dealing with doctors either.

Answers:
Different medications affect people differently so just because it helped your friend does not mean it will be the right medication for you. I would suggest a psychiatrist over a general doctor. They have more training and experience when it comes to mental health and mental health medications. Most general doctors have a 6 week rotation in psych were a psychiatrist has to have a one year residence in a psychiatric setting. Also wellbutrin can increase anxiety as well as agitation in some people.

Other Answers:
Talk to any doctor since it's a prescription drug.
You can talk with your regular doctor...I was on Wellbutrin and I didn't help my depression or Anxiety but did help me to cut down on Smoking..
I don't know if Wellbutrin is the best idea. Why don't you go to your doctor (a psychiatrist isn't necessary) and tell him/her what's going on. Maybe Wellbutrin is what you need, but maybe not. Wellbutrin made me crazy. Careful with what you choose.
Hi
Your primary physician can prescribe wellbutrin. However a psychiatrist is much more knowledgeable about the medications that help social anxiety. There are medications that work better for the disorder than wellbutrin. Everyone is different and what worked for your friend might not work for you. I would talk to your doctor and get his/her perspective, if a psychiatrist is recommended I would see one its better than being anxious all the time. Good Luck :)
WELL HUN..........YOU NEED TO SEE A DOCTOR TO GET ON THE RIGHT MEDS..........WELLBUTRIN ISN'T THE ONLY ANT-DEPRESSAINT OUT THERE. JUST BECAUSE IT WORKED FOR YOUR FRIEND ............DOESN'T MEAN IT WILL WORK FOR YOU. YOU SAID YOU DON'T LIKE DOCTORS...........TAKE THAT LAST STEP AND GO SEE ONE...........YOU'LL BE A WHOLE DIFFERENT PERSON THAT YOU WANT TO BE IF YOU DO.
GOOD LUCK
You can go to your doctor and they can prescribe something for you. I tried both Lexapro and Wellbutrin for social anxiety and I liked the Lexapro better. But I had side effects from the Wellbutrin so didn't use it very long. I've heard it is supposed to be good for controlling weight also. Good luck.
Wellbutrin is a psychotropic medication and is normally only prescribed by a psychologist or psychiatrist. This is normally prescribed for depression. You may find you need something like Depakote(spelling?) to help with anxiety.
Tell your family/primary physician about your symptoms. If you tend to get so uptight that you talk really fast & can't stop & then forget what you were talking about...write it down & give it to him/her.
In some cases Welbutrin causes anxiety. Learn about all options then see a Dr.
