is there anyone with mental illnesses that can be a support system? I have Bipolar, BPD and OCD?

Question:
I have mental illnesses and so do all 3 of my kids. We are all on meds for them and we have been through ALOT as a family and I have always found it hard to make friends with people because of the "special conditions" that we have.I would like to talk to other people that have the same issues that I have to have support and maybe just be friends.

Dear Celestialgal,
You've certainly brought your mental health concerns to the right place! The Y!A community members are fully aware of and do appreciate the intimate conditions involving your prognosis.
Most recognized doctors in the field of medicine would employ a holistic approach to your ailment. Celestialgal, please begin your day with a well balanced breakfast to include an ample portion of fruits and grains. After your morning routines are finished, enjoy a brisk walk around the block. If you happen to meet any stray dogs along the way, it would be a good idea to antagonize the creatures in order to add some vigor to your workout.
Now Celestialgal, the remaining portions of your day should be filled with interesting activities and new studies to keep your mind active and in balance, complimentary to what you have done with the physical side of yourself.
After loitering around at the public library all afternoon with a bunch of smelly hobos, you can appreciate a warm bath and time to be good to yourself. Begin to collect an archive of various music genres that you can resolve one day to enjoy after you get the rest of your chores done.
Celestialgal, if after following my advice, simply take two aspirin and forget we ever had this little discussion.
Thank you, Celestialgal. Have a great day!
Dr.Jake

I have BPD and Bipolar as well, and I realize how hard it can be to get support. My email is malzees@yahoo.com if you want to talk!
Check out the forums on About.com and NAMI.org. I write on the bipolar and homeless forums on NAMI.org. I'm also ADHD, have had BPD and OCD as secondary diagnosis depending on who you asked at one time or another.

I'll be glad to talk with you there.. You are definitely not alone!

I have a couple of initials after my name too, and none of them are academic degrees! LOL .. I often joke that I should put my disorders on my visiting card cos much of my experience and learning comes from having them.

Seriously though .. I know how hard it is with those "special conditions" and the average person just NOT understanding or relating. Often they're sympathetic, but really it's empathy we need.

You are on the right track in wanting to find "kindred spirits" .. it's really a huge comfort to interact with people who have gone through similar things. I'm a survivor of child sexual abuse and it really did make such a difference to know I wasn't alone, that there are others with so many identical thoughts and feelings. I actually run a group for survivors now.

I guess searching on the internet is a start .. I noticed someone mentioned a couple of Yahoo! Groups and that might be a good way, because once you're on the online group, you can then start finding out about actual groups that meet in your city.

Good luck and hope this is a start of a new support system for you, we all need that and I'm glad you're making this effort.
