how is depression "debilitating" ?

Question:
Depression is debilitating mental illness.

What does that mean? How debilitating it is?

Answers:
It depends. Depression results in lack of motivation and energy depending on its severity. It also affects decision making. People with depression also suffer more aches and pains. This is a well documented illness that involves neurotransmitters in the brain. The brain is simply another organ in your body that can malfunction just like any other organ. Severe depression can result in suicide. I'd say that is pretty debilitating. Teenagers and older adults are more apt to end their lives due to depression. It can involve a tremendous amount of emotional pain. About one in four Americans suffer from clinical depression in their lifetime. People often tell others who are suffering form depression to pull themselves out of it. It is like telling someone who has no legs to walk up a flight of stairs. They can't. There are countless sites on the Internet that you can go to and educate yourself about depression. Take a few minutes and go to one of them. The next you go to your doctor talk to him or her about it and get some literature while you're at it.
Depression is debilitating because it makes you feel so horrible some times that you cannot function. There are days that you can bearly get out of bed, and then there are days when you do stay in bed because everything and everyone is totally overwelming. People who are diagnosed with depression aren't faking it or just lazy. They don't choose to be the way the are and they can't just snap out of it. It is a real disease. Their brain chemicals are unbalanced so they cannot function normally until that is fixed either through meds or counseling. In some cases it is debilitating because the right mix of meds are difficult to find. There is no test(like a blood test or x-ray) that can tell you exactly what the problem is. One last thing: would you ask the question why is diabetes so debilitating? I view depression the same way: it is a disease that the patient cannot control unless some type of intervention such as meds are used.
