panick attacks?
Question:

Panic attacks are very scary, the first one especially because you're not sure what is happening. The first time I had one I thought I was going to die and I was so scared. I was laying in bed one night and it just came over me; my heart started beating really fast and I had trouble breathing so I just laid there, very still and started to control my breathing - long, slow inhales through my nose and long, slow exhales through my mouth. Eventually my body calmed down and I felt normal again.
I did some research the next day online and talked to a few friend and he told me what was happening. Knowledge was power in my case. I had a more, but I was able to calm myself down. I eventually went to my doctor because after my attacks I would have a lot of pain in my chest. She gave me a perscription for Effexor, an anti-depressant, but I didn't really want to take them - I had control over my panic attacks, control over my depression and I just didn't see how this pill was going to help me.
That was probably 3 or 4 years ago and since that summer I've only had maybe 5 panic attacks, and they were very short ones because once I could feel them kick in I tackled the situation and was able to calm myself down. A lot of relief came from distracting myself with music or doing work on a graphic art project I was working on at the time. Distraction helps A LOT.
I think people jump to medication way too quickly - it's too easy to pop a pill. Knowing what was going on and knowing what was causing my panic attacks is what really helped me, but everyone is different and I suppose there are cases where the only help is medication. I just think that getting to the root of the problem and taking the necessary steps to quell one's anxiety is a much more beneficial method - it will make the person stronger mentally and emotionally and pills don't always work.
Mind over matter.
I hope this helps whomever this "question" was directed towards. I just wanted to share my experience.

I get these! Just like Tony Soprano.
TAKE VITAMIN B12 COMPLEX. ITS LEGAL TO BUY AND IT HELPS WITH STRESS AND ANXIETY. Panick attacks are just a state of mind and people use the term to get meds. Just like Bi Polar, they used to call it spoiled rotten and the cure was an *** beating.
I get them, it brings on my asthma too.
Did you put it so people who had P.A would look and read your advice?
I get them, and have for nine years. Recently, I was out of medication for 1 full month - and couldn't even leave the house. Fortunately, someone told me about a clinic which is only for people WITHOUT insurance, and charged nothing--not even for the medication. I go there every two weeks for counseling and medication until my insurance comes through.
Please, everybody who takes meds for anxiety of any sort -- do not let yourself run out! Do whatever you have to do to get that med! Anxiety and Panic attacks go together, I know because I suffer from both, they both can make you feel like you can't breathe, make your throat dry, make your chest hurt, and feel like your having a heart attack, the best thing to do is to taqlk to your doctor, and he or she will probably prescribe a medication for you.
One thong you have to remember, anxiety and Panic attacks do not just disappear, the Meds will help control them but there are times even with the meds, when you are going to have them, the best thing to do is to keep your mind busy, the more your mind is kept busy ( like answering these questions ) the less time your mind has to spend on panic/anxiety attacks.
Also remember your not alone in this, there are Millions of people who have this illness, but the only ones who truly understand what is happening to you, etc, arethe people who have or do suffer from it, some people think you can just turn it off and on at will, but that is not the case, it isn't like a light switch where you can just turn it off and on they happen when ever they feel like happening, not when we want them too or don't want them too, but as long as your mind is kept busy you will find that your having a lot less problems with it. i used to get them, then i realized that you can get a prescription from your family doc. mine was that everytime i wouldhave one, my heart would pound, i would get dizzy, i actually stressed myself out about it so much, that it lead to other things such as anxiety, i would fear getting panic attacks so much that i would get chest pains. now on a med called lexapro, no more panick attacks and minimal anxiety.
