Before answering your question, let's talk about "CHAKRA". Chakra is a gate of receiveing and transmit of your energy. Whole body system have 7 chakras major, and 298 chakras minor. This 7 chakras major located along your spine (vertebrae).Their name in sanskrit. Their roots located along your spine, while they are blooming like flower infront of your body. Their petas rotate. If someone's chakra is not clean, he will get sick. So all chakras should be balanced. Chakras never close their petals until the body is dead. Problem come with chakras is QUANTITY (open with big petals or small). Problem come with energy is QUALITY of energy itself (clean or not).
Yoga and meditation come through to encounter these two problems but in different way.
Most yoga in practise comes with specific positon. for example: if your both hand bend over your back, it mean to make your HEART chakras more bigger and fast flowing of its energy.
Meditation just put attention to your body, mind and soul. Not many position of meditation as I know. The Energy you take in meditation regulate your whole energy system in your body Just breathing in rhytmic, to gain energy from out side to your body, and breath out. You can make a circulation of energy by doing this in the morning, while the air still fresh. Don't forget to think that oxygen you've taken is also an energy, right?
Someone to be free of soul? maybe you mean "out body experience" sometimes called with OBE. I preffer to meditate to get it, because it's less in specific position, you only pay less attention to your breath. Yoga also can reach the state of OBE, but it performed by master as I know.
Awakening to your chakras heightens and intensities your spiritual awareness but, important as this is, spiritually cannot trully flourish unless you are also on pathway to fulfilment expression unless you are a whole being - healthy in mind, body, emotion and spirit.

I know a bit about meditation, and have forayed in the tantric and Yogi arts. Meditation is a good way to center yourself, the question is, does it feel natural and right when you do it, otherwise your soul may never be free.
Yoga is an excellent way to keep yourself both physically and mentally.
I did yoga for several months. At first, I really liked it...then it became boring. I think you need to change things up, change the music etc. to keep it interesting. But I think it could help you "free your soul"

Yoga also does very little for one physically. To achieve physical health, one needs vigorous exercise which places heavy demands on the muscles and cardio-vascular system. This means weight training and aerobic activity, of which weight training (NOT aerobics) is the most important for achieving health and losing fat.
Let us abandon such silly, childish activities as yoga and "eastern meditation." They have been promulgated in the West by hippie hucksters who try to make money off ignorant and unstable unfortunates.
