Am I bright?

Question:
I just took the iq test and and got 129 points. Am I bright? What is the full mark?

Answers:
The average IQ according to most tests is "100". 100 is considered the "average" score. At 129, your are approximately two standard deviations (approximately 15 points for most tests) "brighter" than the average.

It is important to remember that on-line IQ tests aren't accurate and are to be taken with a grain of salt. The validity of all IQ tests has been questioned for years, but online tests are notorious for giving inaccurate responses.

Many things can affect your score, including sleep deprivationl, moderate to extreme test anxiety, depression (even mild), distractions (ie: kids yelling in the background), overthinking a question , etc.

The most widely used test in North America is generally considered to be the WAIS. I took the WISC as a child (Weschler's Intelligence Scale for Children) and hit the ceiling, which means that it wasn't able to score fully. Many IQ tests only reliably score up to 130 or so.

Also, many IQ tests do not accurately test those with superior intelligence and special tests have been devised for those that are significantly above the statistical average.

The most important thing to remember is that IQ tests, as is our understanding of the human brain, is in its infancy and a number can NEVER fully represent the totality of your mental capacity. Einstein was so distractable he likely wouldn't have scored well (he once used an important cheque as a bookmark, and then lost it, and would leave the house in his pajamas because he had simply forgotten to change). Einstein failed grade 10 math. Edison quit school at age 10 and was generally considered an "idiot" by his teachers.

If you are worrying about your intelligence, my guess is that you're probably brighter than average. For the most people, more people tend to worry about sales, tax refunds and sex than their mental acuity. The smartest people I have ever known feared that they were secretly idiots precisely because intelligence was so highly valued by them.

Get a proper IQ test if you want a number. Remember to not overanalyze the questions. Also, there is a pattern to IQ tests that many who score in the upper ranges of are aware of (they don't know the answers but are more aware of the heirarchy of the questions and what answers are more likely to be "acceptable" than not).

Incredibly creative people may do poorly on IQ tests because they see different "correct" answers than the "average" bright person, and those with conditions such as obsessive compulsive disorder may be geniuses but overanalyze the questions and use up their test time. For these individuals, power tests (incredibly hard but untimed) are generally more indicative of their true intellect.

I will give you an example of how one hypothetical question may "stump" someone with an IQ of say, 160, that wouldn't stump someone with an IQ of 130 (the ceiling of many tests)

Consider the following list and select the answer that "doesn't belong":

Dog Hamster Bird Cat Trout.

Most people would immidiately select "trout" because it is not normally a pet and the others are all animals that you can purchase in a pet store.

But wait a second! To the extremly intelligent, life isn't that black and white!

Perhaps the number of syllables is what the test taker is looking for in these words, in which case "hamster" with two syllables is out (all the rest have one).

Some might argue that bird is out because it is the only one (in most cases) that flies, while the others all live at or below sea level.

Bird might also be out because it is the only one to live in the arctic (penguin)- trout don't live in the arctic, neither do wild or domesticated dogs or cats, or hamsters.

As you can see here, there is more than one way to look at many questions and those with superior IQs may actually outsmart the test creators and have more information to choose from in their minds.. ironic that those that can see the most possible "answers" are often penalized for it because it takes up extra time or isn't the "right" right answer.

That's the hierarchy of questions, and until you learn it,, you may very well screw up your score (in this case trout would probably be the one that is out because test takers generally leave the correct answer as the one that most people with an IQ of 100 would get).

Being creative and demonstrating your interest in semiotics or the etiology of words can drop you down a few standard deviations.

When a test is being administed by a living person, usually a psychiatrist, they can pick up on obsessive traits, overly analytical answers, etc, and sometimes reroute the test to get the test taker back on track, so the end result is more fair.

Online tests can't do this.

As I get older I realize that intelligence is fluid, that each one of our neurons contains a "mind" of it's own, and that the very concept of self itself is flawed in a closed system.

But yes, 129 is intelligent, a point under qualifying for Mensa, and generally considered to be in the 97th percentile, almost the 98th.

On a good day, with enough rest, if you score 129 on proper tests, you could get into Mensa (the entry level is 130 and earning an extra point is not difficult with adequate rest, reflection and positive self talk).

The overly anxious, schizophrenic, manic depressive and others that suffer from biochemical disorders of the brain tend to score lower because their symptoms interfere with their ability to take the test properly, therefore they aren't actually less intelligent, but less able to reflect their true intellect. The same can be said for most autists and foreign individuals taking westernized tests.

Other Answers:
The high is 700. You're an idiot.

IQ scores are supposed to be set so that over the whole population, the average is 100 and the standard deviation is 15. 129 would be almost two standard deviations above average. However, whether this score is indicative of anything depends on the accuracy of the test. So far, the fullest point level is 195 (Chris Langan). At a 129 level, you are in an upper area.

whatever... are yourself.
