You have to be conscious of your fear reactions. If you fear open spaces, go into open spaces, realize you will probably start to panic, and then take control of your emotions. Nothing will hurt you. Repeat for shyness and anxiety inducing situations.. exposure to that which you fear is the only way to "get over it" without meds. Eventually as you become accustomed to the situations, you will hopefully feel less stress or even have the stress disappear completely. Hope this helps.. peace!

If you have insurace or the financial means, I would suggest therapy. I have been in therapy off and on for 6 years and have anxiety and once shyness. It does wonders and is the least restrictive alternative to medication.
Get some therapy and take the meds. What is with unhealthy mental people and the medications? NONE of them want to take the meds! That's what they are for is to help you, for God's sake! Why do you want to cut off your nose to spite your face? I don't get it. If I can take a pill to help me feel better and eliminate anxiety and other problems in my life, I'm going to take it!
I don't normally suggest any "doctrine" to anyone, as most of the time I think it's bunk. (ie: religion, self-help program, meditation)...but, what I think is best is to improve yourself as a person. Get involved with something that you have a passion for, something you have a hard time stopping ( music, artistry, designing, exercise, etc) Something that makes you lose all other thoughts and can focus endlessly on. Once you have found this, nothing else will matter. Mostly of the time I feel depression and anxiety are only side effects from denying ourselves who we really are. I don't like crowds, but that doesn't mean I'm wrong in any way. Some people need the clannish environment. I do not. Once you have directed your life in the manner in which you feel more viable and relevant, your confidence issues will resolve themselves, and you won't feel those inadequacies.
Just try and relax and talk to some friends/family about things. Try to get out and do more things, socialize a little. It might come down to taking the meds, but try to do it yourself first.
