What do you do about collateral damage?
Question:
Answers:
Rome was not built in a day. That damage has accreted over time. Remedying it takes equal time and deliberation. Support is of paramount importance. You did not do this to yourself and you cannot undo it by yourself either. If you have supportive friends and family - use them. If not, seek out support groups (live and online) and counseling if you can afford it. Spend some time at the book store browsing self-help literature that resonates with your personal experience. Journal. Build a self-care routine that is realistic enough for you to habitually maintain. Unfortunately the responsibility of building a new healthy life lies solely with you. You can do it. It can be done. People do it all the time. It takes dedication, acceptance and responsible decision making, and it will always be a work in progress. But it beats the alternative. Coping may be easier in the short run, but you cannot do it indefinitely without paying a hefty price tag with your health.
In my case it's taken lots of therapy, a failed marriage and lots of loving family and friends.
