How can you convince someone to quit something you can't quit yourself?

you can't. if you can't what makes you think they will listen to you. you'll be a hypocrite in their eyes. You both should try (key word- try) to gradually quit together.

If you can't quit but you tell others to quit that makes you a hypocrite. Either take the plank out of your own eye or stop judging others.

I think the word is hypocrite. Hard to do unless there is some legal perspective. Like teens and smoking . Illegal . or you are a parent tell a child not to do some thing . but if is a person of legal age and you are not a mother or father figure , then it is really not your place. try quitting first your self . if it is hard for you then you will know how it feels.

you're thinking about the person you're trying to help. it's hard to help yourself because people tend to put others before themselves.

People follow examples better than advice. For example many say that it is good to love thy neighbor. Jesus also lived it. Also Bill Gates is getting out of the computer business so he can live this. The 2nd richest man in the world is being a copycat. He is giving all his money ($36 billion) to Bill Gates!

Take care of yourself so you can take care of others. But I don't just say it. See this website which should help you to love yourself more and then get that person to see this website.
