Risperdal question?

Im perscribed to this stuff, and I dont think Im comftorble with it. I dont like taking drugs, but my doctor says Ill have to be on it at leat 6 months... I have never took it in my life, but she gave it to me in June. Have you or someone you know been taking this? What are the side effects? Do you have to start with .25 mg or can you start with 1? Does it have long term side effects? Is there weight gain or loss? I know its bad to lie to the doctor, but if I tell her, she'll just put me on it longer. I am 15 and I want to know about this so please and thanks.

There was as far as I know a class action suit because of people having kidney problems. You need to drink plenty of water with this med. I was on it and quit. I was always shaking my leg. I am now on an anti-depressant called trazodone. It mostly helps me sleep at night. I have suffered from insomnia and delusions. Sleep deprivation can lead to many of these problems. You might also consider more potassium like from bananas or figs. But drink enough water and staying away from caffeine is important I think. If you are having stomach problems you might be sensitive to gluten's or other foods. Allergies can be triggered by stress too. Keep track of all of your symptoms and do some health research. good luck

first off there's side effects in all meds..........why were you prescribed it in the first place? my son took it for anger problems ........it is a sedative.....you won't gain weight..........you need to take it and see if it helps your problem and if you don't like the effect than you tell your dr. and they will try something different.

My son took Risperdal and he gained 30 lbs. He also developed tics like in Tourettes. He ate and slept all the time. That was at a l mg. dose per day. I recently attended a research seminar put on by the mental health association and they were concerned with Risperdal causing people to develop diabetes because so many people gained a lot of weight while taking Risperdal. The tics, by the way, took almost six months to go away. There are other meds. Talk with your doctor.

risperdal is a neuroleptic medication that acts by reducing the dopamine (chemical messenger in the brain) the side affects aren't what they use to be. you are on one of the good meds. just think if you were on some of the meds of the 60's or 70's thorazine or haldol. some of those side affects are permanent. tardive disconesia. i think you should take the medication exactly as prescribed. altering medications on your own can have not to good affects.
