A friend is obsessed with the end of the world, seeing signs and dreaming about it. Could it be schizophrenia?

Question:
She believes the world is to end on a specific date. She sees signs everywhere and it has consumed her everyday life. She thinks about it often, and the details have developed and expanded over time. It seems to come on stronger when she's dealing with very stressful times in her life.

Answers:
It's hard to say exactly what's going on without knowing more about your friend. There are certainly cultures and religious groups in which anticipating the end of times and looking for signs are considered normal behavior, but there is a point at which it becomes an unusual obsession/delusion. If she's starting to feel like there are special messages out there being left just for her, that could be one sign that she's into the more delusional range of thinking.

As her friend, there's probably not a whole lot you can do outside of just expressing your concern to her in a non-confrontational, non-aggressive manner. You can let her know that you understand that this is an important belief for her, but that you're worried that it's keeping her from being able to live a happy and fulfilling life in the meantime. You can suggest counseling to her - she might find it helpful to have someone neutral with whom she can discuss her concerns and fears.
