Why exactly is it bad to combine St. John's Wort with antidepressants.

Question:
Chemically what's going on there? Could someone point me to some URLs please?

Answers:
there can be an interaction with the two drugs causing the seratonin to become too high or also it makes it hard for doctors to ascertain whether the prescribed antidepressants are at a therapeutic dose as they wouldn't know which of the two medications was causing the improvement in the condition

Other Answers:
I'd ask dr to be safe

Antidepressants usually raise serotonin levels in the brain, and this is what St. John's Wort is also thought to do (though not proven). It is possilbe to get too much serotonin, leading to Serotonin Syndrome, which is unpleasant and unncessary. The reason not to combine them is that they may work too similarly and lead to an effective overdose. I heard not to take Birth control pills, with it.. And any other Anit - depress medication! I take St. Johns wort, But the doctor is letting me take Xanax instead so i have to get off of it! Hope this help..

Legend has it that St John's Wort is a herbal/natural remedy for depression..
