What Are Your Thoughts on Anti-Depressant.

Question:
Is there anyone that is against/pro anti-depressants and why are you? What about giving them to children?

Answers:
I don't think anti-depressants are that great. It is all just a temperary quick fix. when people are depressed they want to get better "right now", and really though who doesn't? But with help from a specialist and really working hard at it, it can be defeated without them. I am not being judgemental or anything but, I was down as far as I felt I could go and I avoided getting help because all the doctors said I needed anti-depressants and I knew that somewhere along the line I lost conrtol of something and all I needed was for someone to help me straighten my life out so I could readjust myself and that worked for me. I am a very stubborn person so I was very determine to do this, If at one point in my life I enjoyed who I was and felt I was everything I needed to be than I can go back to that and depend on myself for that instead of a pill. And you really do feel proud of yourself for every minor improvment. I don't think anti-depressants are a good idea because you become so dependant on that one pill to make you happy every day, wishing that you didn't have to take it but you know if you don't you going to hurt emotionally. It's just an opinion, I don't think anyone is wrong for taking them or considering taking them, because everybody has to do whats best for them in life. I don't think children should take them because doctors don't seem to follow up on them enough wich leads to very high suicide rate. The thing with children is they can't understand why they feel this way and they don't come out and sit anyone down and explain all the feelings they are having. so really i think it is unfair in a sence to put a child on anti-depressants. some doctors just aren't willing to work at it and you really need to find the one that is.

Other Answers:
I think that they are only a temporary fix. Whatever issues are causing the depression still need to be dealt with.

I suppose I would be more pro anti-depressants if they were accompanied by some type of counseling. Or perhaps an investigation to see if it is just some type of chemical imbalance that is causing the depression.

I just don't like the idea of throwing a pill at every problem without more investigation

Look, I am on an Rx anti-depressant that has saved my sanity, my llife, and my children. In the instances of a correct diagnosis, correctly monitored, these prescriptions can rescue lives and give hurting people a chance to heal.
I don't know about children, though.

antidepressants have really helped me.
in children though there is an increased risk of suicide while on them..now whether the children would have committed suicide without them remains to be seen.. depressed people have a higher rate of suicide so it might not be the meds..
