Can trauma remove the power of speech?

Question:
Can shock or trauma render someone speechless and is it temporary? how can someone be brought out of it?
Any help I'd be so appreciative. Thank you.

Answers:
I wouldn't call it an actual physical condition as such, but I think sometimes people lose the /will/ to speak. I also think there was some evidence of soldiers in the first world war being silent after the war, so yes, I think shock and trauma can take away speech. Whether it's voluntary on the part of the person or not, I couldn't tell you.
