I'm no doctor, but I have had and still do have some mental health problems including depression and suicidal thoughts. I don't take any meds anymore because they didn't do me any good. Well enough of that, here’s my take on your question.

Many doctors say, and I agree, people you commit suicide don't want to die. They hurt, and they want to stop hurting. Suicide will stop the pain. When a person starts to get a bit older, those holidays hold a lot of memories. Memories of more carefree times and of loved ones no longer with them. They tire of being sad and the holidays seem to exacerbate that sadness. When a person reaches that point, suicide becomes a viable option.

When it comes to young people I could only guess. But if I was forced to guess, I think a couple of things happen. One is stress: A world of uncertainties face them and they aren't able to cope with it. The pressure to achieve academically is more than I ever faced. Two is short sightedness: I don't think they recognize some adversities as challenges to be overcome but as absolute barriers to their success. When they can't see life after the adversities they assume a posture of defeatism, and decide to call it quits. And again, the holidays seem to make a person more aware of just how sad they are.

Now that paragraph about our youth is really the wildest speculation on my part. But the paragraph above it is something I feel very strongly about. Most of the adult section I have seen from the inside and I can assure you it is frequently very ugly.

Keep in mind even the doctors aren't 100% sure on a lot of this stuff so opinions are about all you can hope for, especially in this forum.

I hope I was, at least, able to give you something to think about.
