Mental Illness (otherwise known as emotional disability, cognitive dysfunction or psychological disorder) is a broad generic label for a category of illnesses that may include affective or emotional instability, behavioral dysregulation, and/or cognitive dysfunction or impairment. Specific illnesses known as mental illnesses include major depression, generalized anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, to name a few. Mental illness can be of biological (e.g., anatomical, chemical, or genetic) or psychological (e.g., trauma or conflict) origin. It can impact one’s ability to work or go to school and contribute to problems in relationships. Other generic names for mental illness include "mental disorder", "psychiatric disorder", "abnormal psychology", "emotional problem", or "behavior problem". The term insanity, often used colloquially as a synonym for mental illness, is used technically as a legal term.
This is not easy to answer, because there are just so many. Mental illness is not only defined by names, but also by degrees: mild, moderate, or severe retardation is one example. It may also be defined by expected duration: long term depression vs. short term depression is an example.
It would take up too much time to thoroughly answer this, and it would be better if there was more of a direct point to why you are asking.
You are correct in stating that people are guarded as soon as mental illness is mentioned. It's too bad because the majority of people deal with some form of a mental illness withing their life.
It is nothing to be ashamed of....we are individuals, and we handle stressors differently. Also, we may just be predisposed to having mental problems.
Regardless, you deal with it and carry on....
