I went right from Xanax to Klonopin with no problems. I hated Xanax, it would calm me down but when it wore off I had terrible re-bound effects from it.

I became very depressed and somewhat suicidal after coming off of xanax. I wasn't taking very much and I did not take it for long (2-3 months). This was about 20 years ago. Different medications affect different people VERY differently. Your doctor may just think 'you're over reacting', but keep hold of your true feelings about this. You are feeling these things and they will go away once your body rids itself of its specific toxins. There are many other medications that could be more fruitful for you. Drink a lot of water, talk to your friends, rest and this too shall pass.
