Sleep Terrors?
Question:
Answers:
Sleep terror is not an uncommon thing and you see it mostly with little children, but also some adults have it. It's not a typical nightmare, mostly someone doesn't remember anything, and the terror occurs in the stage of deep sleep instead of REMsleep ('the dreamsleep').
The symptoms are for example:
- no dreamrememberance
- waking up disoriented, in panick, heavy sweating, fast heartbeat
- happens mostly in the first part of the night
If you hear your child waking up from it, be soft and gentle, and don't wake the child too much. Just softly comfort the child and be very sweet, and put him/her into bed again.
Check out if something is troubling the child. It can also be that there are just some changes or stages the child goes through that causes the night terror, and it can even be a genetic thing. Like sleepwalking.
Most children just grow over it.
Only in a very few cases night terror becomes a sleeping disorder. Don't worry about that. It is a common thing and does not harm the child in any way.
Does the infant experience this nightly, or only on some nights? If not every night, try to keep track of what the infant ate prior to the disturbed sleep and see if avoiding those foods help relieve the treatment.
My mom was of the opinion that nightmares were nature's way of waking us up to go to the bathroom. She would let us sleep in her bed for a while, then would take us back to bed. Since experiencing the nightmares so bad one wakes up because one truly expects to be killed, I found that by controlling my low blood sugar condition (hypoglycemia), my nightmares have disappeared. Sometimes, if I go off the diet, I can have bad dreams, but nothing like nightmares or terrors.
I think they are not dangerous, but can be traumatic.
