How do I deal with manic episodes?

Question:
My husband has manic episodes. I don't know if it's bipolar or split personality or something else. Everything will be fine one minute, and the next minute he's screaming and saying horrible things like that he is going to break my neck and psychotic things that is very sick. I try to get him to calm down because I know he's saying things that he doesn't mean. He's going to the doctor to get diagnosed and treated, but his appointment is three days away. He has an episode at least once a night. How do I handle it? He is extremely psychotic. I try to calm him down, but it doesn't work. What can I do to bring him out of his episode? (Until he gets put on medicine.)

Answers:
Take him to a psychiatrist and get him diagnosed. It sounds like he needs medication. Read Patty Duke's book, Brilliant Madness. Check out this bipolar support group link.

Check out the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill's website

The guide a psychiatrist uses to diagnose mental illness is called DMSR-IV. It should be in your local library.
Doesn't sound like bi-polar to me. But if he is threatening you call the doctor and let him know you are in crisis situation and may need intervention.
