Do most psychiatry residents dislike their training?

Question:
My friend hates the residency. There is no variety of patients, they are all substance abuse cases given to psychiatry residents. Is this the norm?

Answers:
Well i suppose it depends on the hospital. We do our psychiatry residency with half of the week in a mental hospital and the other half in psychiatry outpatients and ward visits. The mental hospital part is extremely interesting and very varied and i find the outpatients very stimulating as well. Sure there are things which are common like depression and substance abuse, but i can honestly say that i've seen a bit of everything, and i mean everything! (remember all the movies of mental hospitals show someone who thinks he's napoleon or something like that? seen that sort of thing too lol)
If most hated it... then we would probably have fewer psychiatrists....

The norm is that the junior level residents get the most mundane patients. As she progress through her residency, she will get more challenging cases.

To say that there is no variety of cases is very short sighted on her part. Every patient no matter how routine has something to teach a young doctor. Whether it be something medical or interpersonal... she should have more of an open mind.
