Is tourette's syndrome hereditary?
Question:
Answers:
The conventional wisdom up until recently has been that it is hereditary. My son has this disorder, however, no one in our immediate family (myself, my husband, my parents, his parents, all our siblings and their children, and all our cousins) NO ONE else has it.
Last year, (October 2005) there was a breakthrough at Harvard by Dr. Matthew State. He found that through gene mapping, Tourettes may be due to a defective gene. I have the paper and press release in my computer and will email it if you like. It's called "Sequence Variants in SLITRK1 Are Associated with Tourette's Syndrome".
Yes, Tourette's Syndrome can be passed down from parent to child, and is more predominant in men than women.
