What's the difference between bi-polar disorder and scizophrenia ?

Question:

Answers:
Bi -Polar disorder is primarily a disorder of mood, where the person may go through alternating periods of mania and depression.

Shzhziphrenia is a disorder of thought and is characterized by auditory hallucinations and delusions, which are uncommon in bipolar disorder. Physicans use the DSM IV criteria to diagnose mental illnesses. These should help you see the different symptoms in the two conditions;

The diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder requires the presence of a manic episode of at least 1 week's duration that leads to hospitalization or other significant impairment in occupational or social functioning. The episode of mania cannot be caused by another medical illness or by substance abuse. These criteria are based on the specifications of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR).

Manic episodes are characterized by the following symptoms:
At least 1 week of profound mood disturbance is present, characterized by elation, irritability, or expansiveness.
Three or more of the following symptoms are present:

Grandiosity

Diminished need for sleep

Excessive talking or pressured speech

Racing thoughts or flight of ideas

Clear evidence of distractibility

Increased level of goal-focused activity at home, at work, or sexually

Excessive pleasurable activities, often with painful consequences
The mood disturbance is sufficient to cause impairment at work or danger to the patient or others.
The mood is not the result of substance abuse or a medical condition.

The diagnosis of schizophrenia is based on the following;

According to the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV), the patient must have experienced at least 2 of the following symptoms: delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, disorganized or catatonic behavior, or negative symptoms. The patient must experience at least 1 month of symptoms (or less if successfully treated) during a 6-month period, and social or occupational deterioration problems occur over a significant amount of time. These problems must not be attributable to another condition for the diagnosis of schizophrenia to be made.

Bipolar disorder is one of the many brain diseases that shares symptoms with schizophrenia; this leads to mistaken diagnoses, especially in children. It's important to know that individuals with bipolar disorder, even those that display psychotic symptoms as a feature of their illness, never meet the full diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia. Someone with bipolar disorder is not always in either a manic or a depressive phase; he or she may have long periods during which they seem virtually symptom-free (does not have the disordered thinking, delusions, voices, or other symptoms that characterize schizophrenia). Likewise, any psychotic symptoms associated with bipolar disorder should occur within the context of a manic or a depressive state - delusions of grandeur and hallucinations may be either wildly optimistic and grandiose, or completely disastrous and guilt-ridden.

Schizo-affective disorder is a disease that does contain elements of both schizophrenia and bipolar - it can be described as "schizophrenia with a mood component." The major distinguishing difference between schizo-affective and bipolar with psychotic symptoms is that to be diagnosed schizo-affective, an individual must display the symptoms of schizophrenia (i.e. hallucinations, delusions, etc) without accompanying mood symptoms of mania or depression. In a diagnosis of bipolar, an individual may not always be symptomatic, but within an episode schizophrenia-like symptoms are in the context of mania or depression.
Bipolar - people have mood swings.
Schizophrenia - people hear unwanted voices in their head.

.
bi polar is drastic mood swings
