How do I develop self discipline to do what needs to be done?

Ugh, really good question! I have this problem. I've been in a funk for about a year, and I've just been horrible at getting anything done. For me, I think one of the major causes is depression. I don't know about you, but if that is the problem in your case, you are going to have to work very hard to retain any semblance of meaning and motivation in your life, without the help of a professional.
It can be a very destructive cycle, putting things off, getting nothing done, then feeling so low and hateful towards yourself afterwards that you have no motivation to move.
I don't know how I'm supposed to break the chain, but I tend to give better advice to people than I take myself.
I would start with small steps. You mentioned compulsion, as if maybe you are doing these things just because you are afraid what would happen if you didn't. Fear then, could be one of your biggest hurdles. Everyone feels fear. Humans experience fear more than any other emotion. If you feel gripped by it, paralyzed with some unnamed anxiety, perhaps the best approach would be to fully explore why you're afraid. If you can get to the center of what is causing you to stall, then you are more likely to free yourself from it. Meditate, focus all your concentration and energies on one specific thing, and fully explore that. Ground yourself, for in complete stillness it is said one can find their motivation. I don't know. If that sounds like a bunch of nonsense to you, then maybe a more active approach is needed.
Start with small steps. Find something you enjoy and make a dedication to do something towards it at least once a day. This joy will free you to do the things that you know you must do anyway.
You can start by setting goals you want to achieve and sticking to them. For example...after you get home from work or school..write a list about what you need to get done that afternoon. I tried it...it helps. Because if you get done what u need to get done, you'll clearly have more time to do what you really want to do. U also need the self-disipline to stick to this plan. =)
