bioplar disorder?

Question:
my mother has biopolar disorder. She has had it twice before and I hate going to see her because it makes me so upset. Does anyone have any ideas of what I should say to her?

Answers:
Once bipolar, always bipolar. It is always there, though you may have more serious episodes from time to time. Most bppolars can be helped with medication which must be monitored by a Dr. and may include regular blood tests to check medication levels in the blood. You both need to read and educate yourselves of what bipolar is and isn't. Being able to recognize the symptoms in your own body is most importatnt in managing the disease. It CAN BE MANAGED with medications and understanding. Why should seeing your mother make you upset? She is not bipolar by choice! She does not do this on purpose. If she has discontinued her meds, or has not seen the Dr. recently you might encourage her to do so and even go with her to the Dr. for moral support. She needs to be totally honest with her Dr. as to how she is feeling. She needs your help and love, not your censure. If you think you are upset because of her condition, believe me when I say she is upset as well. Bipolar won't get any better on its own---------meds are normally required along with counciling. It would appear to me that you might need a better understanding of bipolar. Educate yourself, and you may be able to help her manage her problem better. It CAN be managed. God bless.
People don't have it twice before.
When you get it ....it doesn't go away. It is here to stay. The only thing to make it bearable is medication. Just make sure she takes her meds.
