My older sister has mental problems. I need suggestions.?

Question:
She calls me and has her phone number blocked on the caller ID and refuses to give me her number, but she calls me everywhere including at work, at dinner with friends, in the car. She left a photo of Jesus Christ and some TV televangelist on my cell phone about 2 mo ago at about 1 am in the morning. I knew immediately it was her.
Last evening, she wanted me to look up sex offenders in my computer and tell her if 2 men were on the sex offender list because she thinks her 24 year old son is being molested by these guys she in her town and she thinks they may be on the sex offender list. NOT! She says he is spending too much time in the bathroom and she knows he is being molested by someone. I have kind of taken her son under my wing because she is so off center and crazy, I worry she will have an effect on him. I helped him get a job watch out for him. She is driving me nuts. She calls and wants to know about people at his job. What do I do? Can I have her committed ?

Answers:
WOW! Well, the sad thing about the son is that at 24, he's already been affected by her craziness. Children begin getting affected by these neuroic behaviors at around age 2! The fact that he still lives at home suggests she's been very controlling and he just doesn't have the confidence to move out and be on his own. First and foremost, get him to move out ASAP. He needs to see what life is like with normal, healthy people.

Can you have her commited? You should but you can't. Unless she's harming people physically.

This is very frustrating though , I sympathize with you. I would not answer your phone anytime the caller ID doesn't come out, If they want to talk to you, they'll leave a message. Just do this for a while and she will get tired of getting your VM, she'll get sick of calling. She is obviously beyond desparate for attention.

Wow, I'm curioius as to what your parents are like and how you ended up with such a loony toone for a sister! You seem very grounded~

Other Answers:
every state has different requirements, but usually you can have her evaluated by getting the court to order a 72 hour hold for the doctors to evaluate and decide if it should be longer term commitment. get ahold of your mental health society in your community and they can give you more specifics on how to proceed
YES YOU CAN BUT IT IS NOT EASY. IS SHE AWARE THAT THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH HER. IF SHE IS NOT THEN SHE WILL MOST LIKELY NOT CONSENT FOR TREATMENT. MEANING YOU WILL HAVE TO PETITION THE COURT TO HAVE DECLARED UNSTABLE AND HAVE HER COMMITTED. IF THIS IS NOT AN OPTION, THEN YOU AND HER SON NEED TO LET GO AND SOMEWHAT AWAY FROM HER. (I DO NOT MEAN DISOWN AS SHE IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR HER ILLNESS) SO YOU DO NOT GET SUCKED INTO THE MISERY. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND COUNSELING FRO HER SON AS COPING WITH A MENTALLY ILL PARENT CAN BE DEVASTATING. HE SHOULD ALSO BE SCREENED AS MENTAL ILLNESS TENDS TO RUN IN THE FAMILY. GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF YOU !
