Why did the psychologist ask this?

Question:
She asked if i felt suicidal and i said sometimes. Then she asked if i think i would do it and i said i don't think so. Then why did she ask "but if you were going to do it, how would you do it"?

Answers:
This is actually a normal part of the questioning for a suicidal/depressed person. The reason is that you may feel suicidal, but you may not have any plans on how you would accomplish it. If someone does have a plan, then you look at how feasible it is (I will blow myself up with dynamite..not too feasible. If the person has a plan that they would be capable of following/completing, they are at much higher risk for committing suicide. It is a medical emergency and they will need to be hospitalized.
Please keep up your treatment! I sincerely hope you feel better soon!

emmm that sounds a bit off.

when i went to see a psychologist i was asked if i had ever thought about commiting suicide (i think thats normal line of questioning).. but to ask if and how u would do it - especially when u said no - is definately strange.. i would consider changing to someone else or asking another professionals opinion as i know that personally that would make me feel very very uncomfortable..

it also not very professional, almost as if he/she is planting the thought in your mind (maybe im reading too much into it)

hope this helps and u get sorted out

I think they ask the first part to see if you need to be hospitalized, but asking how would you do it, is a strange question from a psychologist.
they would ask this to see a pattern of behavior. with some people killing themselves certain ways is very ritualistic and there could be warning signs that can be seen. and if you're still confused ASK your psychologist why they asked you that paricualr question.
This sounds strange. Ask your psychologist directly, she is the only one who knows why she made that question.
This is difficult to answer, because in the first place we don't know why you went to see a psychologist. Are you in therapy or was it a single consultation?

The impression I get is that she was being insistent on that point because she wanted to uncover something more general about you. Perhaps she still doesn't know you very well.

The question sounds pointless anyway. By the way, did you give any answer? What was her reaction?

I think that if you are not feeling secure and comfortable with her after a few weeks of treatment, you should quit and look for another professional, if you ever think you need a professional.

If you are young and experiencing problems in your life, don't dismiss them but rather try to concentrate on your immediate future, on your career above all. Study and work as hard as you can, try to see yourself achieving your objective in the near future. Don't give up. And enjoy the simple and free things life gives to you.
It was probably asked to see the level of intent. Typically (but not necessarily always), if a person has thought about how they would kill themselves, or if they have a well-developed plan, that's a pretty good indicator that this is more than a "heat of the moment" thought. If someone says, "I want to kill myself", but they haven't even considered how they would do it, it is typically a more idle threat.
Did a psychiatrist or psychologlist ask? Most the time the psychiatrist ask that question. The psychiatrist wants to put you on medication and/or hospitalize you. I was thought to be suicidal because I painted in red. I finally told her off because my degrees are in psychology. It's not what the psych dr says, it's what I say that's important and that's what matters most. She wanted to know how far you had thought this out.

because she was trying to trick you into admitting that you are planning suicide so that she can have you commited to the psychiatric ward
the detail of the answer could tell someone how much you have thought about doing something.
