It can be difficult to stop certain thoughts without replacing those thoughts with one's that you choose. This has to be done one-by-one.
Next time you find yourself having a negative thought, stop for a second and think about how that thought is serving you. Is it helping you in some way? Probably not, so look at the issue and decide how you can make it better.
Maybe you don't really believe that thought. What do you believe? This is your new thought.
If it's something you can't do anything about, that's OK too. It doesn't help to continue having negative thoughts over something you can't control. Most people don't fully realize this. Remind yourself of this when those thoughts do arise.
If you can do something about it - if you can make things better, then determine how you're going to do that. The more specific you can be, the better. What's the first step you're going to take to make this better? Even if it's just to come up with a plan, it's far, far better than nothing. Ideally, you want to replace the negative thought with this action that you're going to take. This is your new thought, in the form of an action to take.
Next time that negative thought comes up, you have the opportunity to replace it with this new one.That will have the effect of satisfying that part of you that keeps throwing out that negative thought. Eventually, you won't hear it anymore.
Getting rid of it completely may take a lot of repetition, but you can also feel better right away as long as you've got that new thought ready to go. The thing that takes practice is realizing right when those thoughts come up so you can replace them as quickly as possible. This will take a lot of persistence, but it's well worth it. This is an incredibly valuable skill to have. The more you can be aware of what you're thinking and feeling at different times, the more control you'll have over every aspect of your life.
