Why does sleep deprivation mimic the symptoms of depression? Is that really what's wrong with Americans?

Question:

Answers:
Sleep deprivation can make it hard for people to concentrate on the simplest of things, and because of this they sometimes seem apathetic and uninterested of what's going on around them. These are also some of the symptoms of depression, so that's why people usually confuse these two. But sleep deprivation and depression are definitely not one and the same thing.
Huh? I'm American..I'm not sleep deprived...I'm not depressed...and neither are any of the people around me (except occaisionally my sister who is a mother of four). So where'd that come from?
