my husband has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. is it hereditary? we have a 2.5 yr. old son.?
Question:
Answers:
It is not (yet) proven whether bipolar disorder is hereditary or not. But making the diagnosis takes into account the family history, and children of parents with bipolar disorder have a bigger risk of being affected.
Studies with twins etc, strongly suggest that it is hereditary.
Other Answers:
Yes, bipolar is hereditary. My 14 year old daughter, my brother, my aunt, my sister, two nieces are all bipolar.
Although it has been shown to run in families, no specific genetic mutation has been found. It may be more to do with the environment than actual genes. I have a friend who' mom is bipolar, he's bipolar and his brother is bipolar- it does tend to be hereditary.
