Dr. changed my antidepression medication?

Question:
I was on Lexapro for three years, it was doing me a lot of good. (at least I thought so) The only problem I had, and have basically had my whole life, is that I was unable to fall asleep. Three weeks ago my Dr. switched me to Nortriptylin. Was there any reason for him to change my medicine if it was working for me? Is that a logical switch for him to have made? I don't know much about either, except that Lexapro is an SSRI, and that it helps with depression and anxiety attacks. Haven't looked up Nortiptylin yet. Anyone know anything about it?

Answers:
I HAVE BEEN TAKING NORTRIPYLIN SINCE 1997 THIS IS AN OLDER ANTI-DEPRESSANT THAT SEEMS TO HELP WITH SLEEP ALSO. FOR FUTURE REFERENCE NEVER LET A DR, CHANGE YOUR MEDS UNLESS YOU UNDERSTAND THE REASON AND THEN AGREE !! TALK WITH YOUR DR.
ALSO BEFORE YOU START A NEW ANTI-DEPRESSANT YOU SHOULD BE WEENED OFF THE OLD ONE FIRST SO YOU CAN GET A GOOD GAGE ON WHETHER THE NEW MEDS ARE WORKING INDEPENDENTLY OF THE OLD ONE.

Other Answers:
Why didn't you ask the doctor why he swithced your meds?
Nortiptyline is supposed to help you sleep - you're still having problems with that, right? It is a tricyclic antidepressant, stronger than SSRIs and maybe your dr was concerned about your insomnia.

perhaps you reached a plateau with Lexapro - but you could always ask your dr why....it's your right to know
TALK TO DR. ASAP!!!!!
yes i was on it at one time and this particular drug has sleeping agants to help you relax so you will be able to fall asleep take this medicine as directerd do not miss a dose
