I've been taking diphenhydramine for the 2 past weeks..?

Question:
As a result I've had next day drowsiness for the past 2 weeks. Originally I thought the fatigue was caused by a sinus infection but after taking NyQuil one night to go to sleep instead of the diphenhydramine and learning what I know now the next day drowsiness was caused by the diphenhydramine. How long should it take me to get back to normal now that I've stoped taking diphenhydramine?

Answers:
Diphenhydramine, aka benadryl, aka the PM in Tylenol PM. With any sleeping aid, should only be taken on an as needed basis, and continued use will result in the effects you describe. Diphenhydramine will dehydrate you, which will result in feeling sluggish the next day (just like alcohol). Try drinking lots of water when you take it. Nyquil contains alcohol also, which could give you the same problem (even though it sounds like it isn't). You might also try something called melatonin. I don't believe it will affect you the same way, as it is a compound your body makes anyway. (It produces this naturally around normal bedtime, to tell your body it is time to go to sleep) However, taking it as a supplement can give you some wicked dreams (no joke!). I realize this doesn't answer your question exactly, but it looks like you are having trouble going to sleep, so I thought my info could benefit you in some way.

omg i was a prescribed the same thing with the same effects..i only take at night.before bed time..now.but if you choose not to take.will take no more than 48 hours to get it out of your system.
diphenhydramine is a highly sedative (sleep inducing) H1 antihistaminic. its action does not last longer than 12 hrs. further it has less habit forming tendency. so u will return to normalcy soon. but, diphenhydramine is not primarily used for inducing sleep. there are other anti anxiety drugs that are used. NyQuil appears to be the brand name. had u provided the pharmacological name, i would have given more info about nyqil.
anyways, my sincere suggestion would be, not to use drugs for inducing sleep. because they have abuse liability(habit forming). better options would be to reduce anxiety by other methods like meditation, yoga, reading books on the subject. i would suggest books like WHO WILL CRY WHEN U DIE? (BY ROBIN SHARMA) and THE ANATOMY OF AN ILLNESS (BY NORMAN COUSINS)
