I have Social Anxiety Disorder?

Question:
How do I overcome it? And can you explain what causes it?

Answers:
I am a qualified counsellor and there are so many disorders now that never used to be around 10 years ago. Doctors seem to like putting labels on something they cannot really explain. Sounds professional, but doesnt really solve the problem. What exactly is Social Anxiety Disorder?......are you afraid of going out socially? Maybe you are shy, maybe you dont interact well with people...maybe you havent got a disorder at all. All these personality disorders that the medical profession are coming up with now is just absolutely crazy. We all have different personalities, we all can cope differently in certain situations and just because one person is outgoing and another person is introverted doesnt mean someone has a "disorder".

There is a disorder that prevents a person leaving their own home, cant remember what that one is because there are so many, but its not a disorder, its a phobia. It is a real fear of the outdoors. Do you have a phobia about going out anywhere?, or do you just feel nervous when you do? If you have a real fear of going out anywhere, if your heart starts beating at 100 miles an hour and if you break out in a sweat, if your mind is telling you there is nothing to be afraid of and you still are so afraid that going out the door would be the worst thing to happen to you, so you dont venture outside then you have a phobia and you need professional help by a person who is qualified in dealing with phobia's. Clostophobia is another one...a person knows that closed spaces will not hurt them, but they cannot think logically about it and really do experience terrible fear.

If you are nervous about going out and meeting new people, then join the millions of people who experience the same thing. It is a confidence problem probably and you need help in building up your confidence. Counselling will help. Joining self help groups will help. Doing courses will help. You have a problem with low self esteem. What you need to do is to do things you are good at. Start to feel good about yourself...learn you are not alone, and none of us have 100 percent confidence in everything, some are good at one thing and another person is not. We are all nervous about something in our lives. You can overcome this by building up your self esteem and for everyone how you do it is different because we are not all good at the same things. Draw on your strengths...learn what you are good at and build on it. Go and do a self esteem course...there are plenty of options available to you.

But if it is a real phobia as I spoke of earlier, then you do need some serious professional intervention.
