I wish I knew which kind of doctor you were going to see. Chances are that if you are about to see a regular doctor who's expertise is not mental illness, he will quickly refer you to a psychiatrist who is better able to help you. If you are exhibiting any symptoms which would make your regular doctor think that you may be a danger to yourself.{ like suicidal thoughts,} he will act promptly to help you by calling in the experts. If the psychiatrist you see recommends that you need immediate help , do yourself a favor and don't disagree. This, of course, is only going to happen if they deem it neccessary. As far as asking the doctor the right questions goes, you will probably be doing more answering than questioning. One of the first questions you'll be asked is "Have you ever had thoughts of killing yourself?" That sounds really scary but you must be honest with your answer! The bipolar person goes through periods where it feels as though nothing can, or ever could go wrong. It feels like some kind of "high" This is the manic part of the illness. You may see yourself as having extreme powers and often will express this verbally by blurting out great thoughts on how you think we can save the planet, end world hunger and so on. You feel bigger, smarter and better than other people and are not ashamed to say it. You may also feel as though you have a personal reationship with God, when you may have never even been to church a day in your life. You may also feel and act more sexual even when it is not appropriate to do so. These are just a few of the symptoms you could possibly exhibit when mania is present. The opposite end of the illness is the depressive side.and usually follows those periods of extreme energy which have kept you awake for often days on end. You may feel as though you do not want to go about your regular routine at all, your work no longer seems important, you stop calling your friends, spend a great deal of time in bed,cry for no reason at all ,and you may even think that the world would be a better place without you. You anger easily and think that absolutely no one understands you. And unfortunately this is one thing you may be right about. It is very difficult to "get it" when your friends and family have watched the changes in you and are powerless to help you . 9 times out of 10 the bipolar person doesn't believe anything is wrong with them. It takes a great deal of support and understanding to help someone you love get through the process of getting well. I can see that you have taken the first step in recognizng that something may be going on , and gone as far as asking for advice. This says a lot about the kind of person you are. Just remember that not all of the advice you get will be good Be very careful about who you listen to. Some of the advice you get may be pure nonsense. I speak to you as a mother of a child with bipolar.so I know my words come from the heart. Take care and best of luck to you tomorrow .
