i have a question..?

Question:
i am on effexor and lithium is the lithium supposed to help when ur mind is racing or if ur bipolar..how long does it take to work.this is day 10 for me.

Answers:
I am severely bi-polar and am on lithium, I am also a nursing student with a degree in psychology and from what I know about lithium, you need to get tested regularly and have your dosage raised or lowered gradually until your symptoms diminish and you begin to feel normal, blood is usually tested regularly until doctor determines what amount is needed. Lithium can be toxic and detrimental if taken in excess, that is why it is extremely important to have levels checked regularly. You must give this drug at least two weeks to a month to get into your system and the level needs to be correct. I empathize with you because I have suffered with extreme mania and small bouts of horrendous depression for 44 yrs now. All four of my children also display some form of this illness and my mother died of alcoholism due to self-medicating. Back in her day..there was no known treatment and probably no diagnosis. God bless you and good luck.

Other Answers:
It should work fairly soon, but it could take up to 6 weeks for the full effects to take place, Talk to your primary care physician.

Lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) has been used since the 1960’s for treatment of those who suffer from the psychological disorder of manic depression or bipolar affective disorder. The patients would suffer from extreme emotional instability of feelings ranging from well–being to extreme depression and anger.

For many years, the effect of lithium carbonate on patients remained a mystery until Dr. Klein and his colleagues’ at the University of Pennsylvania discovered in 2006 that lithium, a natural salt, deactivated the GSK-3B enzyme. When the GSK-3B is activated, the protein Bmal1 is unable to reset the “master clock” inside the brain which disrupts the body’s natural cycle. When the cycle is disrupted, the routine schedules of many functions (metabolism, sleep, body temperature) are disturbed.
