can the drug oxycotton be used to treat depression?
Question:
Answers:
Oxycontin is not normally prescribed to treat depression but the effects of this drug are different for everyone, depending on there chemical make-up. This drug interacts with endorphins in the brain. It is a pain-killer, an opiate. I am a nursing student and hold a psychology degree as well. I take Oxycontin on a regular basis. I have serious bi-polar disorder and am highly manic. The Oxycontin affects me as a mood-elevator. If I am in a low or depressed mood, it brings me up.If I am in a manic phase(Hyper) it brings me down to a normal level. This is an opiate so it is very addictive, I know from experience because my 26-yr old son is a quadriplegic from a sky-diving accident and takes 180mg a day which is because over three years he has built a tolerance to the drug. After his accident, he was taking 10mg three time a day, now he is taking 60mg three time a day and this is only(I believe) because he is now so dependent on them. It is almost as bad as heroin addiction.

No, it's a pain reliever.
No. It can't. It's a severly addictive drug that has an effect better than heroin. The only way it might treat depression is if you're depressed from being away from Oxycontin (actual name) too long. I have friends whose lives are wrecked from this. Go to a psychiatrist and get help for depression, don't buy these pills.
It can be really confusing whether this drug is helping with your depression or just suppressing your pain. Oxycontin is a morphine derivative. It should only be used by terminal patients or people with extreme physical pain on a short term basis. Depression can seem to lift while on the drug because the drug is stimulating the "pleasure center" of your brain. There are better drugs your doctor can prescribe that are intended for this purpose. Oxycontin is nothing to fool around with.
