Can mental work be as tiring as physcial work?

Question:
I work a physcial job and become tired after work. When I am off I do alot of driving, I feel tired after that. Why? I do little work driving.

Answers:
Yes, in fact mental work can sometimes be more tiring than physical work. A tired body can feel relaxed when given rest.but a tired mind remains tired even after you have had your dinner.. and have retired in your bed.
As for driving.keep some water handy.and sip them occasionally, try to enjoy your driving, if you like music it will help to some extant.
physically you don't do much while driving but driving requires utmost alertness and synergy of body and mind.

I am a programmer and when I have really been concentrating hard for a long period of time I feel exhausted, sometimes I don't even feel up to talking!! Weird eh!

Hmm I dunno, my job is a mixture of both and I still am tired. The brain does use a considerable amount of calories. I dunno.. maybe?? Sometimes more.

Because your so exhausted from the physical work.

Definitely, as often with mental work the adrenaline is up but not being released by normal physical exertion. You might feel better, even though hard at first, to get some physical exercise in at lunch or after work like walking, running or an active sport to help balance the load.

Mental work is much more tiring Definately-what will happen when you get physically tired is you will fall asleep-when you are mentally tired your brain wont lt you sleep as it has so much to process. In the world wars the worst form of torture was keeping you awake for days as the brain cant cope with it. All a bit extreme but a balance between physical & mental work is the way forward for a healthy life & style

yup; sure can.
Driving can by hypnotic with the passing of yellow lines & telephone poles being fairly rythmic.

maybe more.because physical work has to send signals to the brain which convey the tired feeling to your body..and mental work strains the brain directly
