Answers:
Propranolol (INN) (IPA: [proˈprænəloʊl]) is a non-selective beta blocker mainly used in the treatment of hypertension. It was the first successful beta blocker developed. Propranolol is commonly marketed by AstraZeneca under the trade name Inderal.

Pharmacology

Main article: Beta blocker

Propranolol is a non-selective beta blocker, that is, it blocks the action of epinephrine on both β1- and β2-adrenergic receptors. It has little intrinsic sympathomimetic activity (ISA) but has strong membrane stabilising activity.

It is a drug, so be caeful with the doses you take! But it is absorbed fast and has little side effects!

It basicly means that you need a special medication for high blood pressure.
It's a sedative, it helps you relax. It's a safe drug because if you have any side effects, it clears from your system very quickly. Trust your doc, they really know best.
no--experience!
Propranolol is primarily a drug for treating hypertension, so I am not sure why your doctor prescribed it for anxiety. Sometimes doctors find other uses for a drug beyond the commonly accepted ones. If I were to guess, I'd say that it was either because your anxiety is elevating your blood pressure or because Propranolol affects serotonin production. Since high serotonin levels have been connected to anxiety, that might be his/her rationale. Beyond that I'm really at a loss. Best approach would be to ask the doctor.
As wikipedia'd before, propranolol is a medication used to treat hypertension. Propranolol blocks the action of sympathetic nervous system and lowers oxygen demand and blood pressure. When you are under a lot of stress and anxiety, your fight or flight system (sympathetic nervous system) kicks in and you experience things like increased heartbeat, increased breathing, increased blood pressure, shaking, etc. These are all responses designed to get you to safety when in a life-or-death situation. With people with anxiety, their sympathetic nervous system is constantly is on overdrive. Propranolol doesn't treat the anxiety directly, like Xanax or Valium would, but it treats that physiological symptoms you have as a result of the anxiety, making you less aware of it.
